Museveni credits Ruto for lowering Uganda fuel import costs 💰
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni credited Kenyan President William Ruto with helping Uganda secure a new petroleum supply arrangement that reduced import costs. Museveni made the remarks in his birthday reflections marking his 82nd birthday. He stated that Uganda had previously purchased petroleum products through middlemen in Kenya before changing its procurement model. Museveni thanked President Ruto for prevailing over actors in Kenya who tried to resist the changes. The new arrangement involves the Uganda National Oil Company and a global energy trader. Under an agreement signed on August 18, 2023, diesel prices fell from $118 to $83 per metric tonne. The price of petrol dropped from $97.50 to $61.50 per metric tonne, while aviation fuel declined from $114.25 to $79.25. Kenya also allows Uganda to transport petroleum products through the Kenya oil pipeline. Uganda holds a 20.15 per cent stake in the Kenya Pipeline Company. Museveni learned about the intermediaries around 2019 from a Kenyan senator and tasked then Energy Minister Irene Muloni with addressing the matter.
